Manchester United 2-4 Liverpool: What This Result Means for the Champions League Race.

Old Trafford witnessed an amazing 6 goal thriller last night after Jürgen Klopp’s top four chasing Liverpool defeated Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s Manchester United with the final score finishing 2-4 to The Reds.

The win for Liverpool takes them up to 5th place on 60 points with a game in hand on most of the teams above them. This puts Jürgen Klopp’s team in charge of their own top four destiny. If Liverpool win their remaining three games it will secure them a top four finish due to Chelsea playing Leicester on Tuesday night, which guarantees at least one of them dropping points.

Jurgen Klopp spoke about Liverpool’s chances of reaching top four saying,

The only thing we can do to get to the Champions League is to win all our games. We take it game by game. Tonight we were good enough to win it and Sunday we have to be good enough to win the next one.

The Remaining Games:

Liverpool:

  • West Brom (A)
  • Burnley (A)
  • Crystal Palace (H)

Three wins from three would almost guarantee them a place in the top four with the only possible way of them not reaching top four would be down to goal difference.

Chelsea:

  • Leicester City (H)
  • Aston Villa (A)

Two wins from Two would guarantee Thomas Tuchel’s men top four. However, a win against Leicester City would put them as firm favourites to secure a top four position.

There is also the extra factor that if Chelsea finish outside of the top four but win the Champions League final, they will also join the Champions League next season as defending champions. This is due to UFEA allowing up to five English teams in Europe’s top competition.

Leicester City

  • Chelsea (A)
  • Tottenham (H)

Just like Chelsea, two wins from two would secure top four for Brenden Rodger’s Leicester City. But once again, it all relies on their game against Chelsea, and whether they can grab the victory and cement themselves as favourites going into their final game against Tottenham.

With the Premier League coming to a close on Sunday 23rd May 2021, many fans are waiting to see where their favourite teams will end up in the table of the Premier League. Many Chelsea, Leicester City and Liverpool fans will be hoping their side will finish in the top four and secure Champions League football for next season.

Sports journalist and football fan, James Larkin, gave me his prediction for who he thinks will make the top four in this intense race leading up to the end of the season.

My prediction for who will make the top four is, Manchester City in 1st,  Manchester United in 2nd, and I do think Leicester City will fall out of the top four since they have two difficult final games against Chelsea and Tottenham. So I’ve gone for Chelsea in 3rd and Liverpool in 4th.

With a intense week of football on its way, fans can only wait in excitement to see if their team will finish the season with a good set of results.

Who will make the top four?

Only time will tell.
