BUCS PROMOTION GAME – Plymouth Marjon vs Surrey

On Wednesday, Plymouth Marjon University took on the University of Surrey in a high anticipated Basketball game. Going into overtime, Surrey managed to upset Marjon University and get promoted to the highest BUCS league. End score being 90-86.

Marjon’s squad went undefeated all season long, until this game.

Plymouth’s star players, Will White and Hensy Sako had themselves a huge game with 35 points each while keeping them in arms length with Surrey, however didn’t manage to pull through in overtime.

Coach Elvisi Dusha said he is extremely “Proud” of each and everyone involved in and with the team and has “learnt more than (he) expected to” from the players during the season. Elvisi is happy the players have built such a strong bond together over the season and believes that is an achievement in itself.

Many emotions were shared in the locker room from Marjon players at the end of the game.

Surrey University managed to win this important game due to their offensive and defensive rebounding. Although Plymouth seemed to be the better offensive team, Surrey gained majority of their points off of putbacks from their missed shots. This was down to their centre. If Plymouth managed to box out their centre and stop him from getting so many offensive rebounds, they would’ve been able to stop them from getting a lot of easy layups, leading to a much more comfortable win for Plymouth.

Surrey University are now in BUCS highest league while Plymouth stay in the same league as the start of the season.

Although Plymouth Marjon University have not moved up to the next league, it gives them a chance to bounce back next season and prove themselves yet again.

This was the first time in Marjon history to get to a promotion game in this league in any sport, which is a huge accomplishment in itself.

Plymouth Marjon have also learnt from this experience as coach Elvisi said “The next time we are in this situation, we know what to do. We know what we are capable of. We know to make our shots and no sloppy turnovers”.

Plymouth Marjon are very thankful for their fans and family that come to support all of their games.
