Personal experience and hobbies

I have spent 40 years of my professional career working in admin and secretarial posts in both the business and education sectors.

I was made redundant at the end of April 2018 from my post as a senior editorial assistant.  I had originally been employed as an Editorial Assistant in February 2005 to help manage two peer review journals (Medical Education and The Clinical Teacher) and after changes in the office team I was eventually promoted in 2008.  I  have good supervisory skills and managed an Editorial Assistant in this role. I am capable of meeting deadlines and working under pressure.  Good IT skills regularly using Microsoft Office version 13, mostly using Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Very experienced in the use of Outlook communicating by email and setting tasks to manage deadlines.  Very experienced in the use of the peer review manuscript system ‘Manuscript Central’.

After being made redundant I wasn’t quite sure what I was going to do professionally.  I wanted to pursue a career in something that I was personally interested in.  I have always been interested in sport and an active participant throughout my life. I have been a member of Plymouth Harriers running club since 2000. During my membership I have held a number of committee roles: two years as the club’s cross country secretary; two years as the club’s social secretary and two years as Chairlady, overseeing the smoothing running of the club and managing a committee.  During that period I was also race secretary where I was responsible for organising and ensuring the successful running of the club’s annual race which involved the management of a race committee.

I also recorded all of the race results for club members until a new race secretary was appointed.

I have completed the UK Athletics Level 1 and Level 2 coaching courses specialising in Endurance running. I started a beginners running programme for the club in 2011.  Up until recently, I lead two beginners programmes per year taking individuals new to running from walking through to running 5K. It helped to increase our club membership and helped to improve the health and fitness of individuals in the local community.

I also lead training sessions a The Brickfields athletics track on Saturday mornings for athletes who are members of local running clubs that are part of the Armada Athletics Forum.

In my spare time aside from running I enjoy walking on Dartmoor National Park and the South West Coastal Path with my husband and taking photographs of the wonderful scenery.  I do intend to enrol on a photography class at some point in the future.  I also enjoy cycling and ashtanga yoga.

After being made redundant I wanted to do something different from office administration. Because of my love for sport it seemed only natural for me to enrol on the BSc degree in Sports Therapy at St Mark and St John’s University, Plymouth.  I have enjoyed the first year of my studies and am looking forward to continuing this new challenge and experience.
