A female client aged 19 was treated for upper back pain. This can be caused by stress of work and sitting at a desk for long hours with bad posture. The client has previously competed in hockey and is currently a student.

When observing the muscle, the clients left shoulder was more elevated, suggesting a tightness within the upper fibres of the trapezius. The left shoulder was extremely tight; however, the client didn’t feel any pain on palpation.

Treatment began with effleurage to the upper trapezius fibres to help warm up the muscle and prepare for further treatment. Petrissage was then applied to help to identify any tightness or knots within the muscle some of which were found along the medial border of the scapula, NMT’s were then applied. This helped to relieve some of the pressure in the affected area and increase ROM at the muscle.

ROM can be tested before and after treatment to help identify whether the treatment has successful or if there have been any improvements within their ROM.
