09.12.19 – Massage of tight left quadriceps for female futsal player

Date: 09.12.19

Duration: 1600 – 1700 – 1 hour

Venue: Marjon Sports Therapy Clinic

Reflective Summary:

The female futsal player had damaged her femur and compromised all of the knee ligaments in a football match two weeks ago.  She has received physio and a programme of exercises to strengthen up the ligaments and muscles around the knee.  She is weight bearing now to encourage the femur to heal but there is some compensation.

Upon palpation of the left quadriceps muscles I could feel tension in the vastus lateralus and rectus femorus muscles.  During effleurage I checked the pressure with my client and she said that the muscles were very sore and tender.  I applied superficial effleurage and petrissage to improve the venous return and to ease the tension in the quadriceps muscles.  I did not massage too deeply because it was too uncomfortable for my client.  I advised her to drink plenty of water to help the circulation of the blood and lymphatic system and ensure that the massage was effective in reducing tension and soreness in the muscles.
