15.07.20 – Session 7 – presented by Gareth Bale on Clinical Practice in Elite Rugby Tournaments

Date: 15.07.20

Duration: 1 hour

Online via Microsoft Teams

Reflective Summary:

Gareth Bales’s background is with the Osprey’s rugby team.

During his talk he gave us an overview of delivering clinical practice during elite rugby tournaments.  The COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges for the 2019 World Cup championship in Japan, where he worked with the Scottish rugby team.

Gareth gave us some insight to the lessons that he has learned along the way during his career:

He stressed the importance of fostering relationships during our degree and beyond to help us move in the direction that we want to go in our professional careers.  Fostering and maintaining relationships will build our contacts which will help us later, when needed.

He recommended building a base of volunteering by creating opportunities which can open doors for us later in our careers.

Also continue to develop our learning and to never stop learning – continue to love the job that we do.

Learn to say ‘yes’ more – it is an opportunity to learn more along the way.

Be an advocate for sports therapy by working hard to be the best that we can be.  Work on improving our weaknesses during our degree so that they are not weaknesses anymore.

Our qualification will get us through the door – but continue to develop and hone our skills before embarking on a masters or PhD.

I found Gareth’s talk very interesting and very motivational and inspirational.  All of his advice is very useful and helpful going forward.
