First week with scott introduction to the clinic and learning to use the laser and gym tour and clients.

This session was the first of a placement with Scott Silsbury in Newton Abbot. This is based at a Venture fitness gym where there are a variety of different clients who have gained injuries from sports and other daily jobs.

The beginning of this session was a basic introduction to the gym and the equipment used within the gym. There was then an introduction to how the placement will be ran in the clinic with the use of cliniko and the laser therapy that is available in the clinic. The laser was an interesting piece of equipment which is not often used due to it being expensive. The laser can be used to help reduce inflammation and decrease pain and promote tissue repair.

There was a variety of clients in during the day included below:

The first client was seen was a follow up with shoulder pain at the rotator cuff muscle in the left shoulder. The laser was used to demonstrate how to use it and help relieve pain and identify any trigger points. Massage was then applied to help relax the muscles and promote lymphatic drainage.

Other clients throughout the day were seen for a variety of shoulder injuries, knee pain and lower back pain. These clients were treated using METs, the laser or with massage to help reduce pain, inflammation and increase ROM.

Once client was seen for adductor pain after falling off of their horse several weeks ago. There was a significant amount of bruising more distally however this had decreased from previous weeks of laser therapy. Further laser therapy was applied to help reduce inflammation and pain.

The final client of the day was a 52 year old female who had previously completed chemotherapy. She has been attending for several weeks with knee pain and has made significant improvements in strength of the lower extremity. The appointment began with a subjective assessment to assess improvements or if there has been an increase in pain. With no further symptoms present, the client was then taken to the gym for a warm up of their choice which was the step up machine for approx. 5 mins. They were then taken over to the squat racks where they performed 3 sets of 8 reps with the bar, which was then progressed to a 10 kg weight. With the additional weight the client had a large amount of knee valgus so the exercise was then regressed.

All clients seen this day will attend the following week where further treatment will be applied.

Further revision into the effects of laser therapy and exercise prescription can be completed to further improve skills.
