Christopher Nolan’s atomic epic, Oppenheimer, fittingly swept the 2024 BAFTA ceremony winning seven awards, including the prize of the night – best film.
The epic biographical thriller based on the father of the atom bomb, J Robert Oppenheimer, has led the awards season so far with last nights BAFTA awards further cementing the film as a cinematic masterpiece.
Cillian Murphy who stars as the world-renowned physicist won the award for lead actor, while his co-star Robert Downey Jr picked up the supporting category for his stellar performance as Oppenheimer’s nemesis Lewis Strauss.
Christopher Nolan, the films highly regarded British director won his first ever BAFTA in his speech he said the award was an “incredible honour” and went on and payed tribute to the cast and crew. Before ending his speech with a nod to the work of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, in accepting his award he wanted to “acknowledge their efforts and point out they show the necessity and potential and potential of efforts for peace.”
Oppenheimer also picked up awards for Cinematography, Original Score and Editing.
