In my first virtual summer session, I got the opportunity to listen to a presentation from Ben Logan who is the lead strength and conditioning coach for the women’s England Rugby 7s team.
Reflective Summary
Initially, it was interesting to learn and understand the challenges that members of the medical team face such as small squad sizes and how they overcome these problems. This can include implementing prehabilitation programmes into training, in order to prevent players from getting injured in the first place. One thing that stood out to me was how essential it is to plan a rehabilitation process considering different factors such as the mechanism, individual etc, implement it, monitor/assess and then act if something isn’t working. Ben briefly discussed biological healing, as this needs to be respected so tissues and structures are stressed at the right time. We also need to remember that depending on the anatomical involvement, the length of the healing process may vary. I found this information very relevant to what we had studied in second year as we learnt about the biological process of healing. Although the knowledge that Ben shared has helped me to understand how this process can be applied to rehabilitation. Assessment selection is key in guiding the rehabilitation process while managing the risk of re-injury. We need to ensure clinical tests are specific to the injury, the individual and the potential risk factors are considered. Things to Remember:
