Sports Massage Clinic

During this session today I massaged my clients legs focusing on the quadriceps group.

What happened in this session:
Today I massaged the legs of my client focusing primarily on the quadriceps group and also working on the calf muscles and touching upon superficial massage of the hamstring group. I started by massaging on the front of the leg effleurage the quadriceps group and then working into a deeper massage using petrissage and tapotement techniques to get deeper into the muscles that were causing her pain and tension after a training session earlier in the week.
I did have a few issues today as I went straight into massaging I did not put the bed at the correct height for me and therefore I started to get aching pains in my back until I finally realised that I hadn’t put the bed at the correct height for me to be massaging using the correct technique. Also, I knew my client quite well and therefore as I was walking around the bed I noticed that I kept taking my hand off the client as I moved which left her feeling as if the massage was over and moving position making her less relaxed. I need to add this to my things to remember as if I did that with a client I did not know as well they could possibly get off the bed and it would look extremely unprofessional.

Areas for improvement:

I started the massage today with the bed in it lowered position from when my client got onto the bed. This then left me bending over to perform the massage and I was not using the correct technique and it also started to hurt my back. I must make sure to remember to place the bed back up to the correct height suitable for me before starting to massage my client to ensure that I am protecting my back and not causing issues for myself.

When massaging my client and moving around the bed to massage from a different position to cover the whole area in the best way possible. I must make sure that I do not take my hand off my client when moving around the bed. When I took my hand off the client this lead to my client moving thinking that the massage had finished. This can lead to the client being less relaxed, by keeping my hand on the client they know that I am still there and that the massage is not finished ensuring they do not move and keeping them in the relaxed comfortable position before I started to move myself.

Things to remember:

Protect your back.. ADJUST THE BED ACCORDINGLY!

KEEP HANDS ON THE CLIENT. You must keep the client relaxed!

Try using techniques that require less movement around the bed.

Kneading of the Quadriceps group
Transverse palmer kneading of the quadriceps group- Wringing
Effleurage of the calf muscles
Effleurage of the quadriceps group
