Open Clinic- Second session

1 Hour

What happened during the session:

During today’s session, I worked with a client who was a second-year sports therapy student. They had come to the open clinic after they started experiencing DOMS 3 days ago as a result of training legs 5 days ago. The muscles were extremely tight as the client was complaining of the legs feeling as if they were cramping up almost. I decided to massage the client using only effleurage and petrissage ensuring to not cause the client any further pain allowing 15 minutes each leg. Once I had completed the massage I moved on to performing a MET with the client getting them to perform the SLR and stretching it to a new bind after 10 seconds of 30-40% resistance 3 times in a row. I also decided that taping the hamstrings would be a good idea as it would help to relax the muscle, increase the circulation and provide support to the area allowing the muscle to get rid of the cramping pain and relax helping to reduce the pain inflicted upon the individual.

Areas for improvement:

Timekeeping was a problem as I did not realize how long it would take me to tape the client whilst wearing gloves. being allergic to the tape that is used means that I have to learn how to tape up a client while wearing gloves which is very difficult due to the sticky nature of the tape. This is something I will have to practice until I am able to do it quickly and efficiently. As a result of this, the session overran and I had to rush to clean down the equipment before the next class arrived.
Another weakness was not taking full advantage of the opportunity to massage a second-year student as I did not ask them for feedback upon what I did when and what I could improve upon in their own opinion and therefore this session was not used to my advantage and the next time I get the opportunity to massage a second or third year student I must remember to take full advantage of it.
