Formative Assessment 2

1 hour

What happened during the session:

During this session, I massaged a second-year sports rehabilitation student to get feedback upon my massaging techniques. I massaged then as they had pain in the shoulders relating to DOMs as they have recently upped they’re training. I started the session by completing a consultation form, observing the client, palpating the client and testing their range of motion to see if they had any pain on movements.
During and after the massage the second year student filled out a formative assessment sheet with certain criteria based on my performance ticking and crossing on areas depending on if I performed them well or not.
This session and assessment went really well, I received all positive feedback and extra comments about my communication skills and palpating skills how I am doing it clearly and correctly as well as my ability to explain treatment and reasons for treatment to the client and explaining the treatment throughout the session. The final comment I received was ‘very welcoming, professional and an all-around good massage’, this left me feeling confident within my ability to work professionally and with new clients which I once before felt nervous about when doing so.

Areas for improvement:

During this feedback session, I did not receive any negative feedback or constructive criticism which I am happy with as the client felt the massage went well and has confidence in my abilities, however, if I feel I had a few points about my own performance. During the session before putting lotion on my hands, I should have put a towel over the clients back and therefore I had to wash my hands put the towel over the client to protect their clothing and then reapply the medium and therefore this was a waste of lotion. To ensure this doesn’t happen again I need to remember to towel the client before applying lotion to my hands.
