Emergency First Aid at Work (with AED)- 6hrs- 24/03/21

During this course, we learnt a lot of things about how to deal with emergency first aid situations. As I have previously completed first aid at work qualifications and NPLQ this course to me was more of a refresher to get up to date with the current protocol and to renew my qualification.

The modules and areas we covered during this training included:

  • What is first aid?
  • Legislations
  • Responsibilities
  • Action in emergency
  • Primary survey
  • Secondary assessment
  • The respiratory system
  • Resuscitation and AED
  • Disorders of respiration
  • Adult basic life support
  • Disorders of circulation
  • Wounds and bleeding
  • Seizures
  • Minor burns and scalds
  • Foreign objects

we also learnt different acronyms that will help to perform safe and effective first aid. here are a few of the ones we learnt:

SHAPE- When confronted with an emergency situation, you need to take shape, Safety and protection, Hazards’, Assess the situation, Prioritise and Environment.

DR. ABC- Irrespective of the situation you are confronted with you must always complete a primary survey following DR.ABC meaning you must check the area for and Dangers, Check the patient for a Response and then proceed to check Airways, Breathing and follow with CPR if required.

AVPU- You can assess if a patient is responsive and the level to which they are responsive by using avpu, this stand for Alert, Voice, Place your hand on their shoulders and gently shake them and unresponsive. If the patient responds leave them where you found them and stay by their safe assisting them with what may be the issue, if they do not respond call 999 and proceed with the correct assessment and treatment of the situation.

The Chain of Survival: During this we learnt the importance of Early recognition of the situation and call for help, Perform early CPR to increase the chances of resuscitation, Early defibrillation as using a de-fib as apposed to using CPR alone can increase the chance of survival and post resuscitation care.

Reflection of the session:

Although I have already performed many different First Aid courses and NPLQ courses and by-weekly first aid training as a lifeguard during lockdown we have been almost a year without any kind of training or use for first aid and therefore it was great to identify weaknesses in my first aid abilities and notice the updates to certain areas due to current research so it was definitely beneficial to get and update of the new protocols and refresh my current knowledge.
