Open Clinic

1 Hour

What happened during the session:

During this session, I massaged a client that I have massaged once before, as they were suffering from lower back pain. After researching hip mobility and tight hamstrings in relation to lower back pain, I decided to perform the musculoskeletal tests for the hip even though I did not know them very well I used as many as possible and asked the lecturer when I needed help. After noticing that the clients hip was full mobile displaying no abnormalities. I then went on to test the hamstrings to see if they were tight performing a straight leg raise I also perform a test on the hamstrings while in the straight leg raise dorsiflexing the foot. This test if causing more pain could be a result of the sciatic nerve issue however, if the symptom is not worsened then it can be considered as tightness or injury in the hamstring. When I performed this test on my client they had no change in the pain that they were experiencing so as I predicted from my research their hamstrings could be causing them to be having lower back pain. I proceeded to massage the hamstrings trying to loosen the muscles. Once I had massage the clients hamstring 10 minutes on each leg I performed an MET while the client was in a straight leg raise holding the leg at its bind while my client pushed against me at 30-40% of their maximum force for 10 seconds allowing them 5 seconds to relax before lifting the leg to the new bind and repeating another 2 times (3 times in total). After this, I spent the last 5 minutes of the session posture taping my clients shoulder using K-tape, this was my first time K-taping a proper client and it did not go as well as I hoped.

Areas for improvement:

An area of weakness for me today was rushing the taping portion of the session. The taping was bad as needed to be more over the shoulder to help support posture. If I had allowed myself more time I would have been able to think about the taping a bit more, not rushed it and therefore been able to perform it effectively.

As a result of needing to rush my taping my time keeping was a weakness as if I didn’t spend so much time on the consultation, massage and MET I would have had more time to tape my client’s shoulders and then it would not be an area of weakness.

Left shoulder taping= Good
Right shoulder taping= Bad
